WHAT TO EXPECT

The Okavango Delta region is a unique part of the Africa, which has been formed by the Okavango River flowing inland rather than out to sea as the majority of rivers do. The river then fans out into the delta before disappearing into the sands of the Kalahari Desert, thereby creating a lush wilderness which offers a marvellous year-round wildlife experience.

Okuti Camp is located alongside the Maunachira River in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve. It caters for a maximum of 18 guests and accommodation is in the form of uniquely designed and very comfortable thatched cottages, each of which has proper beds, furniture and spacious en-suite bathroom. Two of the cottages consist of two bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities, so are ideal for families.

All of the cottages have raised wooden decks with views out over the river, while there is also a swimming pool to cool off in during the heat of the day. The lodge is very well managed and the standard of cuisine is excellent. Meals can either be taken in the dining lodge or in the open air, around the campfire.

Each day you will have a chance to enjoy action packed game drives by open-sided vehicle on the game-filled plains of the Moremi Game Reserve. In addition to your daily game drives, the camp is one of few that offers year-round boat-based activities, exploring the deeper channels and lagoons and giving you a chance to view wildlife from different perspectives. The area is a favourite haunt of elephants – sometimes seen in breeding herds – and you may see adolescent bulls that might trumpet at you before ‘crashing’ into a shallow Okavango lagoon.

  • Scheduled light aircraft flight to Kalahari Desert
  • Game drive transfer to your camp

WHAT TO EXPECT

Dinaka Camp is a newly refurbished camp situated on a vast, private reserve on the northern edge of the world-renowned Central Kalahari Game Reserve. “Kalahari” is derived from the Tswana word Kgala meaning “great thirst” – and it has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent water. The Kalahari Desert is the largest sand basin in the world stretching 2500 km from the northern regions of South Africa through to Namibia/Angola and ending in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world (52,800 km²) and for many years was closed to the public, hence it is known for being one of Africa’s last true wild areas.

The term ‘desert,’ is however not quite accurate when referring to the Kalahari; the region receives an annual rainfall of 60mm-175mm, too high to be classified as a true desert. The Kalahari’s vegetation consists mainly of grasses and acacias, as well as stunted thorn and scrub bush, and there are over 400 identified plant species present. About 1100 metres above sea level, the largely unchanging flat terrain is occasionally interrupted with gentle valleys, sand dunes and a large number of pans, which vary in size and complexity. These are invaluable to the wildlife as they supply them with nutrients from the salts and grasses of the pans. In contrast to large areas of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the Dinaka private reserve has several, permanent, life-sustaining waterholes and so the game viewing is excellent all year round. Predators abound, with plentiful Lion – especially the famous Kalahari black-maned lion – cheetah, leopard, jackal and the rare desert specialist – the brown hyena.

Several species of antelope are found in the area which include giraffe, eland, springbok, steenbok, oryx, hartebeest, kudu and duiker. Honey badger visit regularly, as well as ground squirrel, bateared fox, porcupine, aardvark and aardwolf and many an hour can be whiled away watching these fascinating animals. A real highlight of any stay at Dinaka is the possibility to see rhino, one of only a handful of places where this is still possible in Botswana.

Bird life is aplenty with the world’s heaviest flying bird – the kori bustard – being common as well as the black korhaan who continuously calls during the daytime. Ostrich are seen roaming free, usually in large flocks. All the sand grouse species identified in southern Africa live here, from the double banded to the Namaqua which are a sight to see in the mornings as they flock to the waterholes in their thousands, to drink and bathe. Raptors from the most common pale-chanting goshawk to the rock kestrel, bateleur and brown and tawny eagle are also seen regularly.

Guests are accommodated in only seven custom built desert tents, each with en-suite bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower. For families, there is also a wonderful two-bedroomed desert suite, sharing a spacious en-suite bathroom. Dinaka’s rooms are well spaced and raised up on wooden decks giving the perfect vantage point over a permanent waterhole that sees wide range of wildlife coming in to drink throughout the day.

The main area of camp consists of an open dining room and bar, comfortable lounge area, and a viewing deck complete with campfire overlooking the waterhole. The camp also offers facilities such as a swimming pool, a star deck for evening meals, photographic hides strategically located near to waterholes around the reserve and even a sleep out deck to enjoy magical nights under the star filled African sky.

During your stay at Dinaka you will be able to enjoy exciting morning and afternoon game drives in comfortable 4×4 vehicles. Parties of four will have their own private vehicle to explore this stunning area with complete exclusivity. Additionally, you can enjoy guided bush walks with the camp guides, who are all local San Bushmen of the Kalahari, the oldest surviving culture in the world. Walking with your Bushman guide you can experience, taste and feel how these wonderful people of the African continent used to live, and adapted in this arid land.

On your 2nd and 3rd evenings here, half of the group at a time can spend a night sleeping under the stars. After dinner you will depart with your guide on the short drive to Dinaka’s ‘sleep out deck’ which comprises a upper sleeping platform and a lower platform with bathroom amenities, Drifting off to sleep with just a mosquito net between you and the wide African sky you are surrounded by the sounds and scents of the bush. In the morning you awake to the dawn chorus and spectacular sunrise views before returning to camp.

DAYS 7 TO 9: Saturday 8th – Monday 10th November

JOURNEY

  • Game drive transfer to airstrip
  • Scheduled light aircraft flight into The Okavango Delta
  • Game drive transfer to camp

ACCOMMODATION

  • Kanana Camp
  • 4x Luxury Tents
  • 3 nights

INCLUSIONS

All meals, soft drinks, local beers, wines and spirits, laundry service and shared game-viewing activities; day and night game drives, guided bush walks, mokoro canoe trips and seasonal boating and fishing. A night on the sleep-out deck is included for stays of three nights or longer.

The delta is home to over 70 different mammals, including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a variety of plains game as well as the predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. The birdlife is also prolific with over 350 species recorded, including some fascinating migrant species.

Kanana is one of the most remote safari camps in the Okavango, located in a beautiful part of the southern delta where intricate channels of sparkling waterways irrigate hundreds of square miles of grassland and forest. The camp comprises eight very spacious canvas rooms, each set on raised wooden decking. At the front of each tent the decking extends to a veranda where you can relax and enjoy views of the open plains and palm trees of this beautiful wetland region. Seven of the tents can be twin or double rooms as required with comfortable safari furniture and en suite shower, flush toilet and hand basin, while the eighth is a spacious family room, which can easily accommodate four people. The accommodation is stylish and elegant, whilst retaining an authentic, “Out of Africa” safari feel, with natural tones and rich wooden features blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

There is a comfortable lounge, dining area and fire deck, perfect for swapping stories and enjoying a drink after the day’s adventures. A secluded swimming pool provides guests with a private relaxation spot from which to enjoy some down time between activities.

The team manage to blend exemplary service, with a relaxed, informal feel – a delicate balancing act that they always get just right. The food is delicious, yet unpretentious and the expert guides never cease to inspire, fascinate and delight with every new foray into the African bush.

Kanana Camp is located on a vast private reserve which ensures that when you are out game viewing you will only encounter other people staying at the camp. It also means that you can enjoy the widest possible range of safari activities including game drives by open vehicle during the day and at night when a spotlight is used to see nocturnal creatures, and bush walks with an armed guide when you can learn the fundamentals of bush craft, tracking animals and reaching out and touching things and going to places where vehicles cannot reach. In addition, subject to water levels, you can enjoy motorboat excursions and fishing and, usually all year round, lazy safaris by mokoro (dugout canoe) which are punted silently along the glittering reedlined channels of the delta.

The fertile area surrounding Kanana attracts a wide variety of wildlife and in good numbers. You can expect to see excellent herds of elephant, both lone bulls and breeding herds passing through the reserve, as well as a wide variety of plains game including several species of antelope, zebra, giraffe and herds of buffalo.

Large numbers of predators inhabit the area including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena, while all around are some of the four hundred species of beautiful birds for which the Okavango is famous, including breeding colonies of herons. Smaller creatures such as the spotted neck otter, genet cats, monkeys and the dwarf mongoose provide fascinating side shows.
