In the afternoon, you will proceed with your first game drive in the conservancy, retiring to your camp for dinner and overnight at Laikipia Wilderness Camp (Full Board)
Day 3 – 4: At Laikipia
While at Laikipia wilderness camp you will search for and photograph the elusive and extremely rare Black Leopards, that are being seen there now on a regular basis. Only within the last year or so, Black Leopards are being observed and photographed from vehicles as they become more habituated. In the past, as with the rare and endangered snow leopards, the only way to get a picture of these Black leopards was by using remote camera traps. There will also be opportunities to track down packs of Wild dogs (Cape Hunting dogs, Painted Wolves), and to spend time observing these incredibly efficient hunters in the wild. The conservancy also hosts an abundance of Elephants that are seen frequenting the numerous waterholes to drink and bathe. Your meals and overnight will be catered for by Laikipia Wilderness Camp (Full Board)
Day 5: Laikipia – Samburu
After enjoying a hot breakfast at the camp, you will drive through Nanyuki, situated on the foothills of snowcapped Mt. Kenya, and head northwards to Samburu Game Reserve where you will arrive at Elephant bedroom camp in time for a late lunch. After a brief rest, you will head for your first game drive in the reserve and return at sunset for dinner and overnight at Elephant Bedroom Camp (Full Board)
Day 6 – 7: At Samburu Game Reserve
The next two days will be spent enjoying guided game drives in the reserve. In addition to hosting the ‘Big Five’, Samburu Game Reserve is also home to the ‘Special Five’ which include the gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and the Beisa oryx. Due to the arid nature of the reserve, animals in this area have adopted unique behavioral and physiological adaptations to surviving with limited resources available such as food and water.
At this time of the year, large families of Elephants gather on the beaches of the Ewaso Nyiro river to socialize and rekindle bonds with one another. The reserve is also well renowned for its leopard and lion, both seen regularly along the riverbanks. On occasion, Cheetahs are also spotted within the reserve. Meals and overnight at Elephant Bedroom Camp (Full Board)
Day 8: Samburu – Namunyak
You leave your camp early in the morning and head north to Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy to arrive at Sarara camp for lunch. After lunch you will have time to enjoy an afternoon game drive, sundowners and a night drive in the conservancy and then return for your dinner and overnight at Sarara Camp (Full Board)
Day 9: At Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy
You will spend the day doing game drives in the conservancy and visiting a nearby Reteti Elephant sanctuary. This is the home of the elephant orphan babies and a visit to this sanctuary would give you the opportunity to really immerse yourselves into their lives and to see the amazing work that the local Samburu communities are doing to protect the baby elephants.
At Sarara there will be many opportunities for horse riding, walking and visits to cultural villages which is well worth doing. You then return to camp for lunch, followed by an afternoon visit to a traditional Samburu village and sundowners in the bush. Dinner and overnight at Sarara Camp (Full Board)
Day 10: At Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy – Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
You depart after breakfast and head south to Sirikoi camp in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to arrive in time for lunch. Your day will culminate in an afternoon game drive until sunset where you return for dinner and overnight at Sirikoi Camp (Full Board)
Day 11: At Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
You will spend this day doing day and night game drives in the conservancy. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is home to White Rhinos and the rare and endangered Black Rhinos.
The Conservancy boasts an abundance of wildlife including all the big cats, Elephants, and the rare and endangered Reticulated Giraffes, and Grevy’s Zebra and a wide range of semi desert dwelling species such as the rare and endangered Grevy’s Zebra (less than 3000 left), Reticulated Giraffes (less than 3000), Beisa Oryx, Grant’s Gazelle Somali Blue Ostrich among others. Gazelle Somali Blue Ostrich etc.
The big attraction at Lewa is not just the wildlife, but also having the opportunity to see how the conservancy runs. It is probably the most professional and well managed private wildlife sanctuaries on our planet today, and getting an insight into the high-tech security systems that they employ, is a revelation in itself. Working with the security tracker dogs and observing how well they track potential poachers, will certainly be one of the highlights of your stay. All meals and overnight will be at Sirikoi Camp (Full Board)
Day 12: Lewa – Nairobi
You will spend the first half of this day at your camp and in the afternoon head to the Lewa Downs airstrip for your flight to Nairobi where you will be met on arrival at Wilson Airport and transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home
