Credit Cards in Kenya
Major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard work widely in Kenya, especially in:
- City hotels
- Restaurants
- Shops in major towns
However, smaller towns, rural areas, and safari camps may not always accept credit cards. Many establishments also charge a small commission or surcharge for credit card payments.
Cash for Safari Travel
When traveling on safari, it is advisable to carry some cash, preferably US Dollars (USD).
Smaller safari lodges, camps, and rural hotels may not accept credit cards. In some cases, they may apply a surcharge or use an unfavourable exchange rate for card payments.
You can easily exchange US Dollars for Kenya Shillings during your trip.
Important Note About US Dollar Bills
Because counterfeit notes circulated in the past, Kenya does not accept US Dollar bills printed before 2017.
We recommend bringing newer USD notes in good condition if you plan to exchange cash during your safari.
